Winter Woes? Gutter Cables to the Rescue:

A Seasoned Electrician's Guide

As a licensed electrician with over four decades of experience at Tri-County Electric, We’ve witnessed the changing landscape of electrical needs in homes over the years. With winter just around the corner, there’s one aspect of home maintenance that often gets overlooked but can save you from a multitude of problems – gutter cables.

The Perils of Winter Ignorance
Winter brings more than just festive cheer; it brings a slew of potential hazards to your home, and one of the most overlooked is the threat posed by heavy ice damming on your roof. Over time, the accumulation of ice can lead to severe damage, causing leaks, and compromising the integrity of your roof. This is where gutter cables step in as your silent guardians, preventing the formation of ice dams and mitigating the risks associated with them.

Icicle Safety and Beyond
While icicles hanging from your roof may seem picturesque, they can pose a serious threat. Unchecked, icicles can become hazardous, falling unexpectedly and causing injury or property damage. Gutter cables provide a proactive solution by preventing the formation of large icicles, ensuring the safety of your loved ones and your home.

Shielding Against Long-Term Damage
Beyond immediate safety concerns, gutter cables offer long-term protection to your roof. The weight of ice dams can lead to structural damage, compromising the lifespan of your roofing system. By investing in gutter cables, you not only protect your home from potential hazards but also extend the longevity of your roof, saving you from costly repairs in the future.

Powering the Future: Your Guide to Seamless EV Charging with Our Expert Installation Services https://www.tricountyelectricservice.com/powering-the-future-your-guide-to-seamless-ev-charging-with-our-expert-installation-services Wed, 23 Aug 2023 16:02:40 +0000 https://www.tricountyelectricservice.com/?p=1046

When you're diving into the world of electric vehicles (EVs), your mind likely drifts to the exciting road trips and adventures that await.

But in the midst of planning your charging strategy for those exciting journeys, it’s easy to underestimate the importance of home charging. Tri-County has a passion for EVs, and certified installation experts to shed light on this crucial aspect and help you make the right choice for your home charging setup.

The Basics of EV Charging at Home
When it comes to EVs, the spotlight often shines on charging stations along your travel route. However, one essential piece of the puzzle is often overlooked: home charging. Most mass-produced electric vehicles come equipped with a Level 1 charging unit that plugs into your standard household outlet (110 volts). While convenient, this method is slow, providing around 4 to 5 miles of range per hour of charging. Overnight, this translates to about 36 to 40 miles of range – perfect for those who don’t exceed 50 miles of daily driving. This setup is hassle-free and suits the needs of many EV owners.

Rev Up Your Charging Speed with Level 2
But what if your daily commute is longer or you find yourself driving more miles each day? This is where a Level 2 charging station enters the scene. This system uses a 240-volt outlet, akin to what’s used for electric dryers at home. It’s also the standard for most public charging stations. The beauty of Level 2 charging lies in its efficiency – delivering about 180 miles of range during an 8-hour overnight charge, roughly half the time of Level 1 charging. If you’re in a hurry or have an extended daily drive, Level 2 charging is the answer. Plus, it’s a great option for those without reliable access to public charging spots. Installing a Level 2 Charger with the help of an electrician is a breeze, and you can place it wherever suits you best.

Picking Your Perfect Charger
With a plethora of EV chargers available, finding the right fit can be a puzzle. Here’s a breakdown of key factors to consider:
Installation Type: Some charging stations are fixed in place while others offer portability by plugging into the wall. Regardless, a 240-volt outlet is essential for optimal performance.
Cable Length: For fixed stations, ensure the cable comfortably reaches your vehicle’s port. Consider future vehicles as well for added flexibility.
Size: Space matters. Look for a compact charger that fits snugly to save precious garage space.
Weatherproofing: Outdoor use requires a weatherproof model that stands up to the elements.
Storage: A charger with a built-in holster keeps cables organized when not in use.
User-Friendly: Opt for a model that’s easy to use – seamless plugging and unplugging should be a given.
Smart Features: Some chargers allow scheduled charging for cost savings and auto-resume after power outages. Smartphone apps can streamline operations.
Safety: Ensure your chosen charger is UL Listed for peace of mind.

Making the Right Choice for You
As an EV certified installation expert , we are here to help you navigate the world of home charging. Remember, while the open road beckons, your home charging setup is the foundation of your EV journey. Choose wisely, and you’ll power up your adventures with convenience and efficiency.

Ready to take the next step? Give us a call at (440) 542-0735 and let’s talk about getting your EV charger up and running.

9Fun Facts About Electricity https://www.tricountyelectricservice.com/9fun-facts-about-electricity Mon, 05 Jun 2023 15:47:41 +0000 https://www.tricountyelectricservice.com/?p=895

1. Ever wondered how fast does electricity travel? The answer is the speed of light!

It has been proven that electricity travels at the same speed as light, which totals an astonishing 670,616,629 miles per hour. To break this down further, 670,616,629 miles per hour equals 300 million meters per second!

So, how does electricity travel so quickly? Well, it is all down to a combination of electrons and an electric current. A flow of electricity is made from many minuscule particles, otherwise known as electrons. When static, the electrons actually move incredibly slowly. However, whenever you use an electrical device, it will be equipped with a wire, which is what enables the electrons to travel from your power supply to your device. The flow is technically known as an electric current, which will only begin its journey when you turn on your device.

2. Lightning is caused by the discharge of electricity in the atmosphere

Lightning is, in fact, caused by one huge electric current. While the clouds may seem to be peacefully moving across the sky, they are actually deceptively active. With ever-changing weather conditions, water and ice are forced up into the atmosphere by warm air currents and then forced back down by gravity. During their travels, the pair become compressed in the clouds, circulating not only around but also inside.

Over time, an electric charge starts to build up inside the clouds – similar to when you rub a balloon against a surface to create static electricity. Inside the clouds, there are now positive electric charges building up at the top and negative resting along the bottom. These then try their hardest to reach each other in an attempt to neutralise.

On a normal day, this isn’t a problem; however, on a stormy day, the turbulent winds cause the electric charges to separate. The negative charges start moving towards the ground, known to scientists as a ‘stepped leader.’ In the meantime, an ‘upward leader’ forms on the earth below, pushing positive charges up into the air. When these meet, they create a giant electric current, which shoots up into the cloud – this is known as lightning!

3. Electricity was first discovered in 600BC

There are many reports that state different dates regarding the discovery of electricity. However, according to Universe Today, electricity dates back as far as 600BC with the Ancient Greeks. The Greeks concluded that by rubbing fur against amber made from fossilised tree resin, they could create their own form of static electricity.

In addition to the Greek discovery, it is also thought that the Romans may have used electricity to create batteries. Back in the 1930s, archaeologists tracked down a set of posts that were designed with copper sheets hidden inside. Experts believe that the Romans used these pots as batteries to power lights.

4. Electric cars actually date back as far as 1832

While most see electric vehicles as a relatively new invention, they actually date back as far as the 1800s. Between 1828 and 1835, Hungarian and American innovators were the first to experiment with small-scale electric cars. Budding inventor, Robert Anderson, developed the first crude electric vehicle in 1832; however, it wasn’t until the 1870s that the car became ‘driveable’ and able to transport passengers from A to B.

More than 60 years after its first invention, the electric vehicle started to grow in popularity. Models were finally easy to drive and no longer gave off a pungent smell of pollutants. They were particularly sought-after amongst women, who wanted a stylish vehicle to travel around the city. By the next century, it is thought that electric cars accounted for up to one-third of all vehicles on the roads! For more information on the history behind the electric car, take a look at Energy.Gov for a detailed timeline.

5. Electric eels can produce up to a 600-volt shock

While this fact may seem a little peculiar, it was too interesting not to include in our article! Despite the name, electric eels are actually a type of fish, but this doesn’t change the fact that they can be incredibly dangerous. Each eel is born with around 6,000 specialised cells known as electrocytes; these are capable of producing an enormous electrical charge of up to 600 volts. Luckily, the eels only release this charge when they are either hunting or spot a predator. More information on electric eels can be found on National Geographic.

Electric Eel

6. 54% of all electricity is wasted

We’re always encouraged to try our very hardest to make the most out of the energy we use, but why? Based on a recent report by The Association for Decentralised Energy, a vast 54% of energy is wasted every single year in the UK, which amounts to a shocking £9.5 billion. When this is broken down further, per household alone, this could be as much as £354, which is more than half the average electricity bill of those living in the UK.

While this is most definitely a surprising statistic, there are many super easy ways to begin to save energy in the home. From unplugging gadgets when they are no longer in use to washing clothes at a lower temperature, you can start making savings in no time.

7. It’s the water in the body that causes an electric shock

While we’re all cautious to ensure that we stay safe around electrics, did you know that the cause of a shock is actually the water inside your body?

As humans, our bodies are made up of up to 60% water, which makes us fantastic conductors of electricity. High-powered electricity is always on the lookout for the path which offers the least resistance and if we come into contact with it, this means that it goes straight to the water flowing through the body, resulting in an electric shock. In return, the muscles begin to tighten, and the lungs become narrower, causing an instant and dangerous reaction.

8. Electricity plays a role in your heartbeat

Every function and movement within the body is triggered through signals, including your heart. Each time that your heart is given the go-ahead to beat, blood is pumped around the body. This signal is passed through the body anywhere from 40-something to over 100 times a minute. This particular function is, in fact, caused by your body’s own electricity.

The heart’s electrical system is made up of three key structures; these are scientifically known as the S-A Node, A-V Node and His-Purkinje System. The S-A Node, also known as the heart’s natural pacemaker, is a collection of cells which is in the upper-right of your heart. These cells are responsible for sending the signals to tell your heart to beat. The signals then travel to the A-V Node, which is a form of ‘bridge’ for the electricity to pass through. Lastly, once this reaches the His-Purkinje System, your heart will beat.

9. LED lightbulbs use 80% less electricity

When using a conventional lightbulb, only around 10% of the electricity used to power the bulb actually goes on light – a huge 90% is wasted through heat. This is just one of the many reasons why more and more homeowners are opting to switch to LED alternatives, not to mention how much better they are for the environment!

Trading in your regular old lightbulbs for LEDs comes alongside an array of benefits. Not only do they use more than five times less energy, but they also last 25 times longer and cost six times less.

Learn something new with our facts on electricity!

There is always something new to learn – from the incredible speed of electricity to the body’s own electrical system; there are millions of facts that we’re yet to uncover. Our nine facts on electricity offer just a handful of the interesting secrets about this widely used resource.

Don’t Trip Up When It Comes to Electrical Safety https://www.tricountyelectricservice.com/883 Wed, 31 May 2023 12:58:08 +0000 https://www.tricountyelectricservice.com/?p=883

Don’t Trip Up When It Comes to Electrical Safety

Whether it’s relaxing by the pool or working on that long-overdue DIY project, remember these helpful tips while enjoying the outdoors.

Working with power tools:

  • When mowing the lawn or pruning with power tools, be sure to wear thick-soled, rubber shoes, and NEVER go barefoot.
  • Never use electric tools around water.
  • Store fuel away from heat sources and out of the sun and NEVER in the house.
  • Store electrical equipment away from water sources and places where rodents or insects nest.

Entertaining is a summertime favorite. If you’re on your deck or patio, or around the pool, you’ll need power, which means you may need outlets and extension cords. Here are some things to consider:

Outdoor Outlets:

  • Use Ground Fault Circuit Interrupters (GFCIs) outlets. GFCIs automatically cut power when a connected device comes in contact with water. Want one installed, contact us!
  • Cover outdoor outlets with weatherproof covers.

Make pool time a safe time:

  • A Tri-County electrician can make sure your pool or spa is up to local code and has passed all necessary inspections.
  • All outdoor electrical receptacles (like boxes and outlets) should be kept covered and dry, even when in use.
  • Use GFCIs to help protect against electric shock.
  • Keep electrical appliances and equipment at least 6 feet away from water.
  • NEVER touch electrical devices when wet.
  • NEVER swim during a thunderstorm.

Whatever your electrical needs are, Tri-County experts are available to help you whenever you need them. We can make sure your electrical system is in order – so you can worry about more important things, like enjoying your summer.

ILLUMINATE Your Outdoor Spaces https://www.tricountyelectricservice.com/illuminate-your-outdoor-spaces Tue, 16 May 2023 14:38:13 +0000 https://www.tricountyelectricservice.com/?p=869

ILLUMINATE your outdoor spaces

One of the best parts of the summer is getting to enjoy the outdoors—whether it’s for entertaining, relaxing, or letting the little ones stay up late to catch fireflies. Having an outdoor haven can make a big difference in how you relax.

If you’re spending time outdoors, especially from the time the sun goes down and moon goes up, you’re going to want a properly lit area. Luckily, there are easy, cost-effective, and energy-efficient ways to light up your deck, patio, trees, pathways, etc.

Adding lights outside might take a professional’s help, especially if you need outlets installed or to get up to rooflines. Think twice before digging a trench or getting up on a tall ladder—that’s what trained and licensed professional electricians know how to do without damaging a sprinkler line or creating a wobbly situation.

For those DIYers on a budget, here are a few ideas you can do safely on your own.

How Do You Illuminate a Backyard?

Use what you have! An easy way to create a cozy ambiance is to hang lights. Whether it’s holiday lights, fairy lights, or if you have a thing for red hot chili pepper lights, you can be creative without breaking the bank.

Trees – Take advantage of the flora of your backyard. You can easily drape string lights from tree branches or bushes. Make it easy on yourself by ensuring your lights are close enough to a power outlet. For a more secure hang, drill a hole in a tree, install a cup hook and wrap the light around it with a tie (twist ties or garbage ties work!

You can also drape lights across your fence.

A note on string lights: Typically, string lights with 50 to 70 lights per string result in a length of 25 to 35 feet. Measure the branches you wish to wrap before purchasing your string lights! The thicker your branches, the more lights you will need, regardless of the length of the branches.

Fountains – There are lights designed specifically for fountains and ponds. These lights are submersible, and many of them are weighted, which means they will drop to the bottom of the pond without a lot of extra work from you.

Add some color by opting for lights with multi-colored lenses or create ambiance with floating solar LED lights.

Consider using LED lights which will last longer and use less energy.

While enhancing your property and providing added security with outdoor lights on at night, tap into the possibility of controlling your landscape lights by remote control or an app on your phone.

Walkways – When you’re entertaining in the evening, you want to have some sort of guidance, otherwise you and your guests will be stumbling around in the dark! Placing spotlights along your walkway adds safety and ambiance to an otherwise ordinary path.

Outdoor flood lights are among the brightest. A 25-watt LED bulb provides a brilliant amount of light (2,650 *lumens), and it takes up to 90% less energy than incandescent bulbs. Not to mention, these types of bulbs can last for over 20 years.

*What is a “lumen?” A lumen is a unit of luminous flux, a measure of the total quantity of visible light emitted by a source per unit of time. Essentially, it is a measure of brilliance.

Fifty lumens can provide low background light. For lighting your backyard, you probably want to stick between 50 to 2,400 lumens. Indoor lighting (like in your home office or dining room) should have a brightness level of between 3,000 to 6,000 lumens. Dim light can cause you damage to your eyes over time (not to mention it’s hard to see!).

Figuring out your lumens.

To give you an idea, a 100-watt incandescent light bulb gives off 1,500 to 1,700 lumens; whereas LED lights produce 70 to 100 lumens per watt (or 7,000 to 10,000 per 100-watt).

Here are some typical lumen amounts for your outdoor lighting:

Floodlights – 700 to 1300. The brighter the lights, the more brilliance they give off, and the more you can see.

Path Lights – 100 to 200

Landscape Lights – 50 to 300 (smaller if you want a muted effect/larger if you want something more dramatic – like lighting a sculpture)

Motion Sensor Lights – 300 to 400

Pool/Pond Lights – 200 to 400

Decks – String lights or step lights are a great way to create ambiance and increase safety, but accent lighting is also an option if you have an outdoor grill or entertainment center. Installing lights under the counter of your outdoor built-in grill can allow you to entertain well into the evening.

Recessed lighting works well if you have a roof overhang on your porch or deck. This type of lighting is easier to clean, and because recessed lighting parts are hidden, they are better protected from the elements.

Also consider adding in-floor lighting for your deck floor or a light kit to your outdoor fan.

Add an Outdoor Electric Fireplace

If you don’t want the hassle of maintaining an outdoor, woodburning fireplace, you can add an electric fireplace to your deck or patio. Typically, electric fireplaces are only for indoor use, so you need to make sure that the unit you’re looking at is OKed for outdoor use.

Electric fireplaces imitate real flames with LED lights and built-in heaters (which are often included) give you option of ambiance + warmth. However, using the heating element with electric fireplaces is optional if it’s just ambiance you’re going for.

Your outdoor space doesn’t have to be boring – and the time you spend there doesn’t have to be limited by daytime hours or even season. A professional electrician can help guide you with lighting options and to help you style your deck, patio or backyard into a place you can relax and retire to everyday.
